VASECTOMY – No Scalpel Technique

Dr Jacques Marchand MBChB

What is vasectomy?

Vasectomy is an operation for permanent sterilisation in men.

The vas is a tube that carries sperm, which are manufactured in the testicle, up to the area at the base of the bladder where semen is made.

Vasectomy is the removal of a part of this tube to stop sperm mixing with semen.

Will it affect libido?

A man’s ejaculation will not change other than no sperm being present in the fluid. His sexual feelings will not change. It is only under the microscope examining the fluid that any change will be seen.

What happens during the operation?

A small amount of local anaesthetic is injected in the front of the scrotum at the base of the penis. This is surprisingly not very painful at all.

A small puncture is made and the skin stretched open. Each vas is drawn up through this puncture wound one at a time as a small loop.

A portion of vas is removed to create a gap in the tube and then sealed. When the ends are allowed to retract back in, the skin closes over and does not need stitches.

How long does the operation take?

The operation takes about 30 minutes. Often the man’s partner would like to observe and they are welcome to do so.

What about recovery time?

It is advised not to do any strenuous physical activity for two days after vasectomy but most other activities can continue.

Is vasectomy permanent?

It is stressed that this is a permanent procedure. Although reversals can be done, it is expensive and not guaranteed to be successful.

A few men would like to store sperm for future eventualities and this needs to be discussed with Dr Marchand prior to the vasectomy being performed. There is a cost per sample stored (usually three samples) and a yearly fee for its ongoing storage. This is organised via the sperm bank.

How do I get more information?

An appointment to discuss vasectomy with Dr Marchand is required to be sure that this is exactly what the man and his partner want to have performed. The operation can then be organised for another time.

What costs are involved?
